William Godwin's Diary

King, Margaret (Countess Mountcashell, Mrs Mason, Moore)

  • Name: King, Margaret (Countess Mountcashell, Mrs Mason, Moore)
  • Gender: Female
  • Birth Date: 1773
  • Death Date: 29  January  1835

This is Margaret King, the daughter of Lord and Lady Kingsborough who employed Wollstonecraft as a governess in the 1780s (ie Margaret was one of the Kingsborough daughters that Wollsonecraft looked after). Godwin met her in Ireland in 1800 when she was married to the Earl of Mountcashell, with whom she had several children. The corresponded several times after the visit, with Godwin clarifying with her his understanding of Mary Wollstonecraft's views on raising children (see St Clair 280-1). On a visit to the continent in 1805 she separated from her husband and cohabited with an exiled Irishman, George Tighe, after which she asked to be known as Mrs Mason. (St Clair, 292-3). In 1807 she came to London and wrote for the Juvenile Library. George Tighe became known as Mr Mason. Her most famous work was Advice to Young Mothers on the Physical Education of Children, which is still in print, and OLIS and Amazon give the author of this as Margaret King Moore - so, as well as the 28 references to 'C Mountcashell' between 1800 and 1814, Godwin may refer to her by some of these other names. See the entry in Appendix II, The Journals of Mary Shelley, eds., Feldman and Scott-Kilvert, and the note on her death on p. 545.
