  • Name: Knight, Robert
  • Gender: Male
  • Birth Date:
  • Death Date:

Rpobert Knight was an MP and an associate of Horne Tooke and was linked to the Whigs. It seems probable that the Knights recorded at Horne Tooke's or Debrett's are Robert Knight, and there are also a number of entries that include some part of the first name. (Godwin notes in the 1796 Diary that he met Rt Knight in 1793) Both sets have been accordingly coded as this Knight. It is possible that Godwin also knew Richard Payne Knight, MP, DNB, but there is nothing in the Diary that identifies this Knight distinctively (and no entry in the 1796 list). However, according to the 1796 list Godwin met T(homas) Knight, DNB, the actor (who features also in The Life of Thomas Holcroft) in 1792 - the entry is to Mr and Mrs Knight . We have worked on the presumption that it is Thomas Knight who accounts for a number of the plain 'Knight' entries, and on whom Godwin calls and who calls on him, between 1792 and 1798. From 1798 there are more frequent references to 'T Knight' and references to 'Rt Knight' are also more common. Where there is considerable uncertainty about the identity of a 'Knight' it has been left uncoded. The Knight recorded in 1807 with Wolcot, and the Mrs Knight recorded in 1806 are likely to be the husband and wife who are Wolcot's landlord - wih Knight taking Wolcot to court for criminal conversation with his wife in 1807. These are not coded. Also unbcoded are the Knight entries on Godwin's 1795 trip to Warwickshire.
