Godwin knows various different Landseers, a family of artists. Contacts begin in 1813, when it is likely to refer to John George Landseer (b. 1763/9), but most are later and sometimes specify ed/c - the sons Edwin Henry (b. 1802) and Charles (b. 1799).

According to St Clair, in 1830 when Godwin was 74 he ‘took tea with the painter John Martin and struck up a remarkable friendship. Martin invited him to dinner nearly every week and was to introduce him to most of the artists of the day including Turner, Wilkie, and Landseer’ (p. 478). In fact, Godwin had come into contact with the family earlier, and from 1813 – 1836 the name is mentioned about 55 times including ‘adv’ meetings following exhibitions, such as an Old Master’s exhibition at the British Gallery in 1824 where he sees Wilkie, Allan, Newton and E Landseer (see also Exhibition List). Godwin is not terribly consistent with his use of the surname, sometimes differentiating E and C, for example, and other times mentioning ‘2 Landseers’. John George Landseer (engraver and antiquary) had 14 children including at least four artists: Jessica (a painter and etcher), Charles (a landscape and history painter), Edwin (the animal painter), and Thomas (a printmaker). The Landseer family members intersect interchangeably with RA circles, so it probably makes sense to leave them coded as is with a note outlining this decision.

Given that the Landseers are such an important family and Godwin has a substantial relationship with John, Edwin, and Charles, each has been coded separately . Where there are multiple Landseers (eg 2 Landseers), they have been coded as as a generic landseer entry with a note detailing his acquaintance with the trio.
