Shelburne became Lord Landowne in 1786 after a long political career. He remained involved in politics although his days of power were behind him. He was sympathetic to the French Revolution which saw him caricatured as a Jacobin in the 1790s.

There is a note in the Abinger Collection inviting Godwin to call and see Lansdowne on June 8 1801. Godwin duly calls that Saturday as the note requests and goes to Lansdowne House on two further occasions shortly afterwards to consult manuscripts (these latter entries have no been coded for Lansdowne as he may not have been present).
