The DNB identifies his particular friends as including Washington Irving. The meetings prior to 1820 are not coded on the grounds that the first set are before Leslie's arrival in England, and the 1816 group of entries are associated very strongly with Godwin's trip to Edinburgh and to his relationship with the publisher Constable. Both sets seem likely to refer to John Leslie. However, the 1820 meetings begin by calling on Leslie with Irving, and the next dines with Irving and Leslie. The death of Leslie in 1832 refers to Sir John Leslie.
