Brother of Charles Lloyd, the poet and novelist. Lloyd ran away from his parents and his career as an apprentice grocer and draper and stayed with Charles Lamb. Correspondence between the two suggest a warm friendship as does Lamb sending him (as well as Southey) an extract from his tragedy John Woodvil. Lloyd described Godwin as a 'most delightful Man - the modulation of his voice was beautiful, and his language uncommonly correct' The Life of Charles Lamb, I, p. 363. His father ultimately tempted him home by purchasing him a partnership in a Birmingham bookselling and printing business.
Instances of 'Lloyd' in 1809 and 1810 have been coded as Robert Lloyd on the basis of contextual evidence; instances of Lloyd from 1811-1818, before the arrival of Charles in London, may refer to Robert but this cannot be said with certainty and the entries have been left uncoded.
