This identification is tentative, particularly as there is only one entry proper in the diary.
Godwin recorded the death of Macklin on 5 February 1795 , but he then crossed out the entry. Charles Macklin in fact died
on 11 July 1797, but a death notice was
erroneously published in The Times for 9 February 1795 stating that he died on the 5th. Thus, it is evident that Godwin's use of Macklin in 1795 was in
reference to Charles; it seems at least possible that his 1796 reference was also to Charles, someone he may well have known
prior to keeping a diary.
