  • Name: Martineau, Philip Meadows
  • Gender: Male
  • Birth Date: 1752
  • Death Date: 1829
  • Occupation: surgeon

While this may be Harriet Martineau's father Thomas Martineau (1764-1826), a Norwich cloth manufacturer, Jewson's Jacobin City seems to suggest that it is more likely to be Philip, due to his greater prominence in Norwich radical circles. In Jacobin City, he appears with Barnard, Rigby, William Taylor etc. and Taylor arranged for Henry Southey, the poet's brother, to be apprenticed to him. However, this identification is still fairly tentative and it would be helpful to find the letter, 'Write to P Martineau', 28.11.1811, which is not in the Abinger collection.

Still need to check: A Memoir of the Late Philip Meadows Martineau, Surgeon: in particular, was Philip Martineau in London during 1811? This is when a lot of the contacts are. The fact that some of the meetings to 'P Martineau' are in London perhaps gives grounds for thinking that the other contacts in London without an initial are also to Philip and that he did visit London (most of the family based in Norwich). Need to apply to the seven uncoded refs to 'Martineau' between 1794 and 1820, the one instance of 'Martineau's' in 1794 and the four refs to 'P Martineau'. There is one ref to 'T Martineau' in Norwich, so this prob is Harriet's father and perhaps it would be worth creating a new keycode just for this one apearance., if only to avoid confusion.
