  • Name: Maurice, Thomas
  • Gender: Male
  • Birth Date: 25  September  1754
  • Death Date: 30  March  1824
  • Occupation: oriental scholar
  • Occupation: librarian

Godwin enters him in the 1796 list under 1796. It refers to:
26 November 1794: 'Call on Parr (adv. Tweddel & Maurice)'
5 April 1796: 'sup at Mackintosh's , w. S P, G Moore, Maurice & Ht.'
16 February 1821: 'Call on Maurice, Museum:'
Even though the first entry pre-dates 1796 it seems likely that Godwin has overlooked this - the reason being that all three are highly convincing as references to Thomas Maurice. Maurice was tutored by Samuel Parr, with whom he appears in conjunction in the first two entries (Parr, S P), and from 1799 he was assistant keeper of manuscripts in the British Museum, which is where Godwin finds him in 1821 and where Maurice lived - he died in his apartments there in 1824.

Samuel Johnson wrote the preface to Maurice's translation of Oedipus Tyrannus; Sir William Jones influenced Maurice's oriental scholarship; Maurice's publications included History of Hindostan (1795-99) and Indian Antiquities (1792-96); in politics Maurice was a 'staunch anti-Jacobin' , reviewing for the British Critic and 'today his work is largely of interest to students of Romantic literature and antiquarianism on account of its influence on Coleridge, Shelley, and other contemporary writers.'
