See DNB.

The evidence suggests that this is James Ogilvie,DNB scholar.

The editors of Mary Shelley's Journal identify James Oglivie as the DNB person, who corresponds with Godwin from 1797 and who returns to England in 1817. (The (Am) after his name on the first entry probably indicates that Godwin regarded him as an American. Godwin notes Oglivie 'defuncto' on 26.9.1820 (the DNB suggests suicide on 18.9.1820). The DNB treats Ogilvie as a critic of Godwin, but it is more accurate to describe him as a critical disciple.

It is not clear who makes up the plural for Ogilvies - which appears on three occasions in 1818, and there are also two 'Ogilvie's' entries.

The January 1797 entry 'write to Jas Ogilvie' has been coded as this Ogilvie. There is an entry for Ogilvie in 1800, but this has not been coded. It is possible that it refers to William Ogilvie (who wrote to Godwin in 1793, asking him to correct a reference to Ogilvie's Essay on the Right to Property in Land. See MS. Abinger c. 2, fol. 26: 28 July 1793. There is, however, little to support this interpretation.
