William Godwin's Diary

Planta, Joseph

  • Name: Planta, Joseph
  • Gender: Male
  • Birth Date: 21  February  1744
  • Death Date: 3  December  1827
  • Occupation: librarian

Joseph Planta, librarian at the British Museum, is identified by St Clair and can be confirmed by a letter from Godwin to Planta in the Abinger papers from 12 June 1805 'I take the liberty of addressing you on a question of some importance to me relative to the British Museum....'. Godwin wants to borrow books and have somewhere to work in the museum without the distractions of the public reading rooms. The letter makes no reference to their previous acquaintance, which was frequent until 1793 and resumed in 1802-3. The diary does confirm writing a letter to Planta on that date.

Godwin records his death in the diary.
