George Romney (1734-1802), painter, was born in Beckside, Lancashire and worked in Kendal before moving to London in 1862. Although he had He had little initial success but by the mid 1770s he had achieved considerable notoriety as a portrait painter and for the next twenty years, he enjoyed great popularity in London. In this period he was close to the poet William Hayley, who also appears in the diary. Romney returned to Kendal in 1799 where he died in 1803.

Godwin notes seeing him once (October 1795), then in association with his own sitting to Chandler in February 1798.
