Rammohun Roy, religious and political thinker, was born in Bengal and later settled in Calcutta. Politically liberal, he founded two Indian newspapers in 1822 and campaigned for a free press. He came to England in 1833 as Ambassador to Emporer Akbar II and developed an interest in British politics. He died in Bristol in 1833.
Godwin meets him on several occasions between 1832 and 1833, at Mrs Woods and Leicester Stanhope's, but he also calls on and writes to Roy, and Roy returns the call (and letter).
