Richard Brinsley Sheridan was an Irish born dramatist who achieved considerable success on the stage with his play The Rivals in 1775. Sheridan subsequetly became close to the whigs and was elected to Parliament in 1780. Godwin met Sheridan early in the 1780s and wrote for Sheridan's Political Herald. He had intermittent contact subsequently, seeking Sheridan's advice and support in the writing and prodouction of his tragedies.
