Holroyd, John Baker, first earl of Sheffield (1741–1821), politician. See entry of 8 May 1788: 'Dinner at Cadel's on Gibbon's birth day and day of publication, Sheffield, Fullaston, Reynolds, Gillies, Kippis.'
The identification of this entry seems certain, given Holroyd's close friendship with Gibbon and his editorship of Gibbon's work after his death.
There is then a long absence, but with one Miss Sheff'd, not recorded here, Sheffield reappears on 30 August 1806 in company with Boaden, and then in 1808, with Planta and K Courtenay. There is more uncertainty about the second and third entries, but both are possible.
