He first appears in the diary on 29 June 1788, where the presence of fellow composer Clementi confirms
the identification as William Shield, composer, (1748/9-1829). (Clementi
and Shield would eventually be buried in the same grave in Westminster Abbey). There is
another meeting with Clementi and a reference to the Bedford theatre in 1788. In 1791, Godwin,
Shield and Clementi all dine at Holcroft's. Holcroft and Shield's friendship was of long-standing,
having both been in travelling player companies in the North of England.
On the correct date, 25 January 1829, Godwin records Sheild's death.
