Shiel was a noted dramatist and later a politician who was one of the founding members of the Catholic Association, the organization set up by Danial O'Connell in 1823 to campaign for Catholic Emancipation. His plays were performed in Dublin and London. He was later elected MP for Milborne Port in 1830 and Louth in 1831.
