William Godwin's Diary

Smith, James

  • Name: Smith, James
  • Gender: Male
  • Birth Date:
  • Death Date:

James Smith appears quite frequently 1801-1821, with the majority of entries occurring 1810-1813. His first appearance is a breakfast alone with Godwin in 1801 which suggests prior acquaintance, as does the truncation 'Jas'. J Smith has also been coded as James. The diary suggests a connection between James, Peter, and Arthur Smith - possibly they are brothers. The entries in June 1810 suggest that this instance of '3 Smiths' refer to James, Peter, and Arthur. James Smith mentioned once in 1788 has been excluded.
