Godwin sees him at public dinners. Also called Lord 'Citizen' Stanhope (St Clair). In a 1790 dinner on the first anniversary
of Bastille Day, Godwin notes being told:
'We are particularly fortunate in having you
among us; it is having the best cause countenanced by the man, by whom
we most wished to see it supported.'
Marshall identifies the Stannhope present as the Whig leader Charles Stanhope, third earl of Harrington.
In addition to the three dinners, there are two entries to E
Stanhope: one at Nicholson's (a chemist, an area in which Stanhope was keenly interested) on
28 June 1799; and one at the theatre on 29 May 1811. It is possible that these are Stanhope, but
since there is evidence that Stanhope was not an enthusiast for the theatre the latter entry has been left
uncoded.
