1795

9  April  1795 (V)

  • Name: Staunton, Sir George
  • Gender: Male
  • Birth Date: 10  April  1737
  • Death Date: 14  January  1801
  • Occupation: first baronet
  • Occupation: physician
  • Occupation: diplomatist

Godwin records Staunton in the 1796 lists, under 1795. This in itself is slightly ambiguous, as two Stauntons in fact appear in 1795: Sir George Staunton and Colonel Staunton. Col. Staunton has not been identified but Sir George Staunton appears in the DNB. Moreover, the order of the names on the list indicates that Godwin was working through the year in chronological sequence and thus by looking at the dates that the two Stauntons appear in the year we can be fairly certain that he is referring to his first meeting with Sir George Staunton.

Although they only appear to have met once, it is unsurprising that Godwin makes special note of this; from his DNB entry, Staunton sounds like someone that Godwin would have been very interested to meet. He travelled extensively and was a friend of Samuel Johnson and Edmund Burke.
