Jeremiah Steele was a baker in Lewes, which he ran with his wife Lydia. They were Quakers and may have been known to Godwin through Clio Rickman. Steel and Langridge (an attorney in Lewes) were both subscribers to Rickman's book of poetry. Godwin's contact with them seems to be limited to his trip to Lewes in 1804 with his brother Joseph in search of Joseph's daughter Harriet, who had run away with Thomas West.
