  • Name: Stuart, Gilbert
  • Gender: Male
  • Birth Date: 9  November  1743
  • Death Date: 13  August  1786
  • Occupation: historian

Stuart was an accomplished historian and a political writer. He obtained an honourary LLD from Edinburgh University in 1768 but did not succeed in getting a chair. He left for London where he contributed to the London Magazine and the Monthly Review and had a strong association with publisher John Murray. In 1785 the Whig opposition asked him to edit the Political Herald which he did, briefly, before an early death brought about by his alcoholism.

According to the 1796 diary lists, Godwin met Stuart in 1784 and he read a good deal of Stuart in 1792-3. Godwin was also asked (but declined) to edit the Political Herald after Stuart's death.
