Godwin's first reference is to 'Dr Thorkelin (of Iceland)'. Subsequent references are to plain Thorkelin, but all eight are 1789-91 and at Hollis's so that the attribution is clear. Thirkelin visited Britain in the late 1780s. He transcribed and translated Beowulf and subsequenbtly took up a chair at the University of Copenhagen.
