Tuffin was a member of Paine's inner circle, according to Thomas Clio Rickman. He was also a member of the Society for Constitutional Information and The Times for 29 June 1790 lists him as a steward for a fundraising dinner for John Horne Tooke's election to the Westminster seat. A Mr J F Tuffin is mentioned in Bewley, Gentleman Radical: a life of John Horne Tooke, 1736–1812, as a friend of Horne Tooke's and in connection with the Society for Constitutional Information. Godwin notes him as 'Tuffen' in the two 1802 entries but thereafter the spelling is correct.
