  • Name: Tuthill, Sir George Leman
  • Gender: Male
  • Birth Date: 16  February  1772
  • Death Date: 7  April  1835
  • Occupation: physician

The identification is somewhat uncertain. According to the DNB, Tuthill was at Cambridge until 1796 (after graduating in 1794 he remained a scholar for a further two years), but he appears in the diary from 1795 and he married 'shortly after graduating..'. He and his wife went to Paris during the Peace of Amiens and were when hostilities were renewed. John G. Alger, Englishmen in the French Revolution, suggests it was Mrs Tuthill's great beauty and a personal appeal to Napoleon that secured their release.

St Clair, whose footnote points to Kegan Paul, identifies 'George Tuthill' as a friend of Mary Wollstonecraft's who waited downstairs in the Polygon while she was ill but refused to attend her funeral because he was not a believer. This is not incompatible with this being the Tuthill from Cambridge. (See, from 1797, letter from Tuthill to Marshall and letters from Godwin to Tuthill). Indeed, it suggests that Tuthill may have lost his faith after Cambridge, and found it again when he returned to the University in 1809, after his captivity in France. There is also correspondence with Tuthill when he is in Germany in 1799.

Tuthill appears with Manning in the diary in 1800-1801, a contemporary at Cambridge, which helps firm up the identitfcation.
