incl. W Wallace 1819
The first mention, in 1800, is to the trial of a Wallace, post-master of Carlow, which Godwin attends during his visit to ireland. This has not been coded..
Thereafter Wallace appears ninety times between 1816 and 1835. Identified with Constable, Curran, Sheil, Lubé, O'Brien and theatre going. He is likely to be Irish. The death date is taken from Volume 2 of Macready's Diary, pp. 9-10
The entry 9.6.1824: 'Call on Wallace; adv. Macready' suggests a relationship with William Macready. Macready's diaries for 1833-51 are full of references to Wallace:
On 19.3.1833 Macready's 'Diary (1908 ed., Putnam NY) notes:
Wallace walked over from Mill Hill and staid dinner. He is grown lusty and florid, without the least shade of
concern upon his brow, and speaking in high spirits of his sanguine
expectations. He spoke of Wolfe's illness so as to recall Rochefoucauld's
observation on our feelings of our friends' misfortunes, and
also acquainted me with the stupid infatuation of O'Hanlon
in sending again for the vulgar little Frenchwoman from whom he had
twice separated.'
The associated footnote to Wallace reads: A barrister and historical writer, with whom Macready was on intimate terms. His
reputation has not survived, but he appears to have been considered noteworthy by his
associates.
See the Abinger Manuscript letter to William Curran on 19 February 1827 about Godwin's research on irish history for the Commonwealth which refers to Wallace's assistance and arranging for them to breakfast with Charles Butler, the Catholic Barrister. See also the diary for the same date.
