  • Name: Ward, John William (earl of Dudley)
  • Gender: Male
  • Birth Date: 9  August  1781
  • Death Date: 6  March  1833
  • Occupation: politician

Godwin records his death, and there are other references to Dudley. He becomes lord on the death of his father, 25 April 1823, and is created earl in 1827. The Dudleys in the Diary all post date April 1823. It is possible that there are earlier references to him as John William Ward. There are various Wards throughout the diary, but nothing singling out John William Ward, and Ward is a fairly common name. From the entry for 27 May 1828, 'Dudley resigns', a reference to his resignation from the post of foreign secretary, we can be sure that Godwin refers to him simply as Dudley.
