Warner is the last name under 1796 on the 1796 lists and the entry comes on 25 December
of that year:
'Dine at H Tooke’s, w. Dyson, Dr Warner & Philip Courtney:'
The Tooke connection allows him to be identified as John Warner: in a footnote to Diversions
of Purley, Tooke refers to 'my much valued and valuable friend Dr. Warner, the very ingenious
author of METRONARISTON...'. Metronariston: or, A new pleasure recommended : in a dissertation
upon a part of Greek and Latin prosody was published by Joseph Johnson in 1797.
In Memoirs of John Horne Tooke, Alexander Stephens provides the following
:
'DR. WARNER. This gentleman, after the usual course of studies, at one of our universities, entered into
holy orders, and became a popular preacher at Tavistock Chapel. He afterwards repaired to France, in
the suite of the marquis of Stafford, then our minister at the court of Versailles, and being present at the
commencement of the revolution, is said to have extinguished all hopes of future preferment, by a
discourse delivered in the ambassadorial chapel. Soon after this, he visited Italy, and died a short
time after his arrival in England, leaving a handsome fortune to a young gentleman nearly related to
him. I have been told that he was a very old friend of Mr. Tooke's, who always spoke of him with
great respect. Either a print or drawing of him was hung up in one of the parlours, and he appeared
to have been a great favourite. When Mr. Tooke advertised his philological work, he transmitted
him a very handsome sum of money by way of subscription, and at his death left him a large silver
cup.'
These accounts might not tally - the second seems to imply that he died fairly soon after the French revolution. The dates entered above (1736-1800) come from the OLIS entry for Metronariston. While there is a risk that we are conflating two different Warners, perhaps brothers, who both knew Tooke, John Warner has currently been taken as the main Warner in the diary, almost always appearing at Tooke's. Philip Warner has been left uncoded and the 'Warners' entry in 1798 provides further evidence that there is more than one Warner in the diary. The two entries in 1804, after John Warner's death, have been left uncoded - their context is also markedly dissimilar ('Alvanley's chambers, bail w. Warner' on 27 January and 'Westminster Hall, w. Warner; adv. Morris & Agar' on 1 February) from the previous entries at Tooke's.
Those entries coded are: • 1 -- dr warner o 1796-12-25 - 'Dine at H Tooke’s, w. Dyson, Dr Warner & Philip Courtney: • 11 -- warner o 1797-07-02 – Dine at H Tooke's , w.
