White, Major/Colonel/General/Sir Henry

  • Name: White, Major/Colonel/General/Sir Henry
  • Gender: Male
  • Birth Date:
  • Death Date:

A soldier whose contact with Godwin seems to be related to using Godwin to write for him. There is no sense that he mixes with any oher of Godwin's contacts. But the two men remain in touch through White's long career, first as a Major (promoted in 1798 but the 1793 entry might be explained by the fact that officers on half-pay were often given an exta rank as a courtesy title). They dine in 1801 just before White goes to India. On his return, as Colonel, Godwin meets him in 1809. He returns to servie, being promoted to Major general in 1812. He calls on Godwin in 1814 and Godwin writes some pages for him. In 1815 he writes a memorial for him. White retires from the service as KCG or KCB in 1815. The H White entries in relation to Hazlitt and Lamb are not coded for him, as this would be a dramatic break from their pattern of contact. White died in Bath in 1822. There are no clues as to the nature of their friendship or relationship.
