Identification is uncertain because of the other Woodhouses in the diary but there are good grounds for identifying some instances as this Robert Woodhouse, rather than his father, Robert Woodhouse. For full details see his father's entry. The entry at the funeral for Godwin's mother for Woodhouse junr does seem to be to Robert, in contrast to his mother whom Godwin saw the following day.
Given Robert's birth date and his relative youth in the 1790s, Godwin may well be meeting his father, a Norwich draper. The proximity to Amelia Alderson arises because the elder Robert is her uncle by marriage and she and the young Robert Woodhouse were grandchildren of James Alderson, dissenting minister at Lowestoft). Godwin first notes a Woodhouse at the Treason Trials, where he is alongside Alderson, but this suggests the father rather than the undergraduate as do many of the contacts in Norwich. The one in Cambridge, where Woodhouse was a fellow of Cauis and where he later became Lucasian Chair of Mathematics, is in fact a journey to Cambridge with Woodhouse and is assumed to be the father accompanying Godwin. However, R Woodhouse entries are assumed to be the son, and O Woodhouse entries are assumed to be his brother Olyett, to whom Amelia Alderson refers in her Diary as her cousin). References to the Woodhouses do seem to be to the elder Woodhouse and his wife, since the younger did not marry intil the 1820s. Thus, we have coded Woodhouse and Woodhouses as the elder, and have a separate codes for the younger Robert Woodhouse (R Woodhouse entries and Dr Woodhouse in 1802) and O. Woodhouse. Other entries are uncoded.
