Baber was keeper of printed books at British Museum. He collaborated with Henry Ellis (his predeccesor) on a revised catalogue of printed books during 1807-1819. He resigned from his position in 1837 when the trustees prohibited employees holding other remunerated positions. Godwin consults him twice, both times referencing the Museaum.
