Joseph Vallence Bevan was an Irish-American student of James Ogilvie. He asked Godwin to advise on a course of studies and Godwin's subsequent advice was printed as Letters of Advice to a Young American in 1818. The death of his father cut short his stay in Britain. He was appointed official historian of the state of Georgia in 1824 and elected to the House of Representatives for Georgia in 1827.
