Buchan was educated at Edinburgh University before studying medicine in London. He also held the post of physician to the Westminster Hospital. The Life of Thomas Holcroft refers to Dr Buchan taking care of Thomas Holcroft on his deathbed.

It is possible that some of the entries refer to his father, Dr William Buchan, but Godwin appears to have distinguished father from son by denoting the former as 'Dr Buchan'. Moreover, Alexander Buchan is linked closely with Anthony Carlisle in the diary and the DNB refers to him attending medical lectures with the same circle as Alexander Buchan so he remains the likeliest identification. Buchan's connections with George Fordyce are also borne out by the diary so all the Buchan entries have been coded as Alexander.
