Canning was a protegé of William Pitt and was one of the most successful politicians of the period. He was also the primary instigator of The Anti-Jacobin, a journal which attacked figures, including Godwin, associated with the opposition and advocacy of political reform.
Godwin met him in the early 1790s when Canning was mixing in Whiggish circles, especially that of Sheridan. Canning had been expected to support the Whigs when he entered parliament in 1793 but had changed his mind at the eleventh hour and supported the government.
Godwin recorded his death.
