Three Dawes have been distinguished - George, Mary, Philip and Carline. Dawes in the diary have been coded as George Dawe, including, Daweand G. Dawe; M Dawe; C Dawe (1806); Dawe senr (1806).

Contacts date from 1802, when the context immediately suggests an artist (eg. adv at James Northcote's). There are also meetings at the British Museum and at an exhibition. There are also a great many contacts between 1805-10, which suggest a connection to the juvenile library. Identification seems to be confirmed through the artistic context of meeting and the correct dates for Dawe's death and funeral. Also, the long period with no contact, 1818-28, coincides with Dawe's years in Russia.

The first variation of entry is a reference to Dawe senr (15 July 1805), probably the artist's father Philip. From August 1805 there are also appearances of M and C Dawe. Dawe never married and so it seems likely that the M Dawe who appears around 20 times is his sister Mary Margaret Dawe (1785-1871), also a professional artist. C Dawe is probably her sister Caroline, and 'Dawes' has been coded as a reference to George and Mary, as the diary and the DNB suggest that she was the closest sibling he had.

G Dawe appears in May 1809 and February 1810. We have taken this as tow instances of Godwin's inconsistency - there seems no reason why he suddenly adds an initial, but we have good reason to think doing so is far from an isolated case. Nor do we believe there the introduction of the initial casts doubt on the identification of all the other 'Dawe' entries.

Mary Shelley'sJournal suggests that Shelley refused a proposal from Godwin and Richard Hayward to negotiate with a Mr Dawe for a loan in 1816 (December). In fact, a loan was secured and Shelley received his share (£100) on 6 December 1816, but it seems not to have been negotiated with Dawe but with another lender, and there is not much evidence in Godwin's Diary to suggest that Dawe was involved, or that it was one of these Dawes. There is only one Dawe entry for 1816 in September.
