Hannah Godwin was William's only sister. She came to London to find work and was employed as a dress-maker - as St Clair notes (p. 37), 'one of the most exploited trades open to a respectable young woman.' However, she seems to have succeeeded to a certain degree. She was in partnership with Frances and Anna French (sisters of Charlotte Fawcett, Joseph Fawcett's wife). She employed a number of young women as apprentices (several of whom appear in the diary (Ann Potts, Elizabeth Axtel(l), Ann Hansard, and Charlotte Littlewood. Other apprentices do not appear in the diary.
There is evidence of trouble between Hannah Godwin and James Marshall. In 1797, Godwin's mother comments that her daughter's character is being harmed by Marshall dinning alone on Sundays with her. And In 1800, there is a letter from Hannah to Godwin welcoming him back, but refusing to come and see him if Marshall is going to be there because of some episode (MS. Abinger c.3, fols. 64-5 and c. 6, fol. 113)(Later entries suggest that their disagreement is resolved). Hannah and Godwin saw each other a good deal when she was first in London. Their relationship seems to have cooled following what seems to have been Hannah's encouragement of Fell's marriage to one of her apprentices and Dibbin's marriage to Louisa Jones.
It has been assumed that Godwin is consistent in the notation of family names. Therefore, all H Godwin's have been assumed to be Hannah while Ht Godwin has assumed to be his niece, Harriet in all cases. Hannah is also referred to as Miss Godwin in the early years of the diary (comparing social circles in 1797 and 1798 when he changes notation gives a high degree of correlation).
There does seem to be one case in which H G is used for Hull Godwin - when he refers to H G and family (5) on 4 September 1805, when he is visiting Norfolk. But otherwise the references do seem consistently to be to Hannah Godwin.
