Rowland Hunter worked for his grand-uncle, Joseph Johnson. Johnson also arranged for his education at the Barbauld's academy at Palgrave. When Johnson died in 1809, Hunter was co-executor of his will. Hunter was bequeathed cash, a small house behind the shop, and an equal share of the business with John Miles (1784-1856), his cousin and Johnson's other grand-nephew.
There is a series of entries to Rd Hunter or R Hunter in contexts that begin in 1798 and that broadly support the identification. There are other Hunter entries in the Diary and it is possible that some of these refer to R Hunter. But it does seem that there is a distinct Hunter, as is evident from the 6 August 1799 entry : 'dine at Johnson's , w. Fuseli, Hunter, Holloway, + Cartwright; adv. Ant. Robinson, John Parry + R Hunter.' Similarly, the continued use of both Hunter and R Hunter in 1815 suggests a continuing distinction between two persons. That said, it is impossible to be absolutely certain that no Hunter entries are references to R Hunter (see the discussion in ).
