Godwin meets Miss Kingsman under uncoventional circumstances - one suspects she introduces herself to him on the basis that he is an acquaintance of her brother's (whom he meets when visiting Wedgwood in 1794). Godwin's letter to her about their meeting is similarly forward. They also seem to meet, with her mother and sisters, in May 1799, again when Godwin is travelling (although he refers to them as Kingman). (There is a Langleybury, in Hertfordshire - written Langley Berry in the Diary, next to their names), which is two miles from Watford, where Godwin's letter is addressed.) E. Kingsman appears in the 1796 list for 1798, and D. Kingsman (probabl her sister or mother) appears in the 1796 list for 1799. These entries suggest that she made a considerable impression. It is rather striking that there is no further contact, although if Godwin was attracted to her this makes more sense, since between their first and last he was wooing Harriet Lee, and after May 1799 he becomes involved with Sarah Elwes.
Miss Kingsman was the daughter of William Long Kingsman (1747-1820), a member of the Irish Parliament for Granard (Longford). He and his wife, Dorothea, had three daughters, Dorothea (1774-1800), Luisa (1776-before 1800) and Emily (1779-1840) and a son Henry (1775-?) Around 1800 they lived in Langley Bury, Herts. Henry would have been about 19 when he meets Godwin as Wedgewood's. It would appear from the 1796 list that it is Emily Kingsman whom Godwin meets in 1798, and her mother and sister Dorethea in 1799..

See the entries for Emily Kingsman and Henry Kingsman. Godwin meets Dorothea Kingsman once, in 1799, after having met and written rather inapproriately to her sister in 1798. He calls at their home near Watford and meets 'mrs and misses Kingman.' That Dorothea is there is suggested by the entry in the 1796 list for 1799 to D Kingsman. That may refer to their mother, also Dorothea, but it is more likely that Godwin was also taken with the elder sister.
