Lansdowne held the title of Marquess of Lansdowne for only four years. He succeeded his father the first Marquess of Lansdowne in 1805 and was in turn succeeded by his half-brother, Henry Petty Fitzmaurice. The DNB states that he led an eccentric life and suffered from ill-health.
His dates of birth and death can be deduced from funeral notices and obituaries in The Times, 24 November 1809, the Morning Chronicle, 19 November 1809, and Aberdeen Journal, 22 November 1809.
