Joseph Godwin was agent to the carpet manufacturers Francis and Thomas Lea of Kidderminster at their London Warehouse, in Bagnio Cout, Newgate Street. Josph Godwin was still working for them in 1804, when there was a criminal case brought against a man for attempting to obtain carpet under false pretences. Howvcer, there is no clear start date to Godwin's employment here, and nothing to suggest that they were associated before 1800. This makes entries for Lea prior to that date, where there is no direct connection to Joseph Godwin, rather uncertain. There are four such entries in October 1797, shortly after Wollstonecraft's death, This is followed by an entry for Lea associated with Joseph Godwin in April 1798. Subsequent entries for Lea are (save one adv at the theatre), clearly linked to Jo Godwin. Given the proximity of the Lea entries linked to Jo Godwin, and those not so linked (especially since one of the latter has a link to Hannah Godwin), we have coded all Lea entries as references to either Francis or Thomas Lea.
