Reed was trained as a solicitor but did not pursue a legal career. He turned his hand to literary endeavours with success and counted Samuel Johnson, William Hayley, Edmond Malone, and John Kemble among his friends. His extensive literary knowledge made him an important source for a number of important literary projects including Andrew Kippis'sBiographia Britannica (1778–93).
Godwin notes meeting him in 1802 in the 1796 list but he had enountered him briefly in 1795. It seems likely that the 1802 call that he paid on Reed was in relation to his Life of Chaucer, the proofs of the first volume he had just received.
