One of the more mercurial and shadowy figures of London radical circles who moves from radicalism to loyalism and back. The links in the diary make the identification plausible. He is associated with visits to Muir and Palmer after their trials, then a series of links through Phillips and publishing circles; then a group associated with attendance at Hazlitt's lectures and with Hazlitt. We cannot be certain that this is the Reid whom Godwin notes but it seems highly likely that Godwin would have made his acquaintance - possibly even before the Diary begins given Reid's association with the Rolliad.
