Sir Samuel Romilly (1757-1818), lawyer and politician. From a young age he expressed an interest in politics and political theory. He supported radical reform in France but his enthusiasm for the revolution soon waned due to the violence and atheism of the regime. Romilly entered Parliament in 1806. His social circles included William Petty and Jeremy Bentham.
Godwin's contact is almost exclusively through Brand Hollis, and is largely restricted to 1789. However, there is a letter from Romilly (written 2 March 1814) explaining that a loan Godwin had proposed did not meet the solicitor's requirements.
Shortly after the death of his wife, Romilly, plagued by concerns about his mental health, committed suicide at home in London by cutting his throat. Godwin records his death on 2 November 1818.
