John Taylor was a well established drawing master who exhibited at the Royal Academy, the Society of Artists, and the British Institution.
Godwin notes meeting 'Taylor, Soc. of Arts' in 1804 in his 1796 list and this seems a strong identification. The 1804 encounter takes place on 12 November and the identification is bolstered as J Taylor appears with Heath, which may be James Heath, engraver and friend of George Robinson.
Also note that Godwin referred to meeting 'Taylor' at a dinner at Reveley's on 14 December 1793. In the absence of any certain information, this has been taken as a reference to John Taylor, the critic, who accounts for the majority of the Taylors in the diary. However, as Godwin was not intimate with John Taylor (critic) at this stage and the other guests were all artists who were associated with the Royal Academy, it is possible that this is the portrait artist and Godwin simply forgot about this initial encounter when he was compiling his lists of acquaintance.
