Brother of Mary; identification doubtful. The Diary records three entries: - one 1 May 1800 'theatre, w. Ml and F and Cha W' the second on 1 January 1806, which is ' Write to Chas Wt'; and a further 'write to' in April 1806.
According to Janet Todd's biography of Mary Wollstonecraft, Charles had been intended to go to America with Joel Barlow and his wife. There was some delay, but he seems to be in America by 1792/3. There is correspondence with Wollstonecraft, informing her that he had made his fortune, but he seems to have lost it subsequently through a calico venture with Hamilton Rowan. He joined the American army in 1800. It is possible he visits London in 1800 and sees Godwin, and it seems likely that it is to him Godwin writes in 1806. But there is no hard evidence to support the attribution. For the second and third entries there is the characteristic use of Wt by Godwin for his first wife's family. But the first entry is not wholly improbable - there is nobody else Godwin is seeing at that time to whom he refers in any similar way - and Godwin would be most likely to use the forename and an abbreviated surname for someone who was family, even if a relative stranger.
