Boaden was a painter who exhibited at the Royal Academy, the British Institution, and the Society for British Artists in the early nineteenth century. Many of his portraits were of theatrical figures as befitted the son of James Boaden, the playwright and dramatic biographer.

James Boaden is a consistent presence between 1795 and 1834, with Godwin usually meeting him once a year or more. Godwin meets John only once, but sees his sister Caroline on several occasions between 1826 and 1831
