Coleridge was one of the most eminent men of letters of his day. He met Godwin in 1794 but their friendship began in earnest in 1799. He advised Godwin on some of his dramatic writings, mostly notably Abbas, King of Persia (1801). Godwin attended many of his lectures in 1808, 1811, and 1818-19. Godwin considered him one of his 'four principal oral instructors', along with Joseph Fawcett, Thomas Holcroft, and George Dyson.
Godwin recorded his death.
