Identification is tentative. Godwin first meets Miles at Joseph Johnson's, and the vast majority of contacts prior to Johnson's death in 1809 are at Johnson's. Thereafter there is some contact wth Joseph Johnson's successor and Miles, but most of Godwin's entries are calls on or calls - and there seems to be an intense flurry of activity around December 1809 and January 1810. Miles may also have played a financial role in relation to Godwin. There are two entries where his name is followed by an indication of money (in one case 26.6.1810, £300; andin the other 1.3.1810 the amount is blotted out. Also, on 17.10 1810 there is a reference to Miles (legacy). Johnson seems to have been responsible for handling some aspects of Mary Wollstonecrafts finances after her death and it may be that this role was continued by his successor There are also a number of CC from Miles in1814. Although there is not much to identify Miles by, there is not much to suggest that there is more than one Miles being referred to.
According to the DNB, Johnson had ‘no direct heirs’, leaving his business and shares to his great-nephews Roland Hunter and John Miles. Tyson points out that ‘To his nephew and namesake, Joseph Johnson, he left £10,000. A like amount went to his niece, Mary Miles, the mother of John, his grandnephew and successor, who also received a bequest of £10,000.’(Gerald P. Tyson, Joseph Johsnon, a Liberal Publisher , p. 213, ). This accounts for the Jos. Johnsons and J. J. entries who appear after the publisher’s death, generally either at St Paul’s Churchyard or with the known Joseph Johnson circle including Fuseli, Bonnycastle, and Leigh Hunt who was newly married to Roland Hunter’s step-daughter. Hunter, Miles, and Johnson (Liverpool) were also named the executors of the will. The 'Miles' entries have been coded for John Miles where they are consistent with the 1809 entries, when calls on Miles increase immediately following Johnson's death, and include advenies with other family members and friends.
The British Book Trades Index has John Miles as an apprentice in 1807, and gives his dates as 1784-1856
