John Taylor was a successful industrialist and prominent Unitarian in Norwich. He was married to Susannah Taylor who, along with a number of their children, also appears in the diary. He went to school with Godwin at the Akers school at Hindolveston. He co-founded the Norwich Public Library in 1784 and was deacon of the Octagon Presbyterian Unitarian Chapel for fifty years. His History of the Octagon Chapel, Norwich was completed by his son Edward and published in 1848.

John Taylor is commonly referred to as 'Taylor of Norich' in the diary although there are some instances of 'Taylor' or 'J Taylor' that have been identified as referring to him due to contextual reasons such as Godwin being in Norwich or association with his children. See the discussion under John Taylor.
